The House of Menzies, Weem, Aberfeldy.

If you should find yourself in Scotland heading up the A9 to the Highlands, take a moment to detour to the village of Weem via Aberfeldy where you will find the House of Menzies We were given a recommendation to visit there for lunch and we were not disappointed.

The building was converted from Castle Menzies Farm and holds a cafe, specialist wine store, gifts and art.

This colourful board greets you at the door with the specials in the cafe and other events.

The specials menu doesn't look particularly different but the prices are very reasonable for the area.
I had the New York Bagel from the special's menu, it was delicious, well presented and the salad was excellent.

My husband had the chicken, bacon and brie pannini from the main menu, again with a really fresh and tasty salad.   Apologies for the photos they were taken on my phone!

Best of all, we ordered a large cafetierre of coffee for two and it was served in these really cool cups & saucers.  It was also some of the best coffee and best value we had all week.

There were some lovely cakes and the soup with homemade rosemary & garlic bread also looked excellent, but I don't think the other diners would have appreciated me taking photos of their lunch!

Sweets

When we were on holiday (vacation) we visited the House of Bruar near Blair Athol, it is a very up market shopping centre and has a lovely food hall.  The abundance and colours of the sweets attracted my attention.

I didn't buy any of the brightly coloured sweets, but did buy a couple of boxes of tablet to take back to work colleagues.  Tablet is a Scottish sweet which is a bit like fudge but has a firmer texture.

Hairy Bikers Big Night Out

Last night I went to see the Hairy Bikers at the Sands Centre in Carlisle.  It was an excellent night out, not a huge amount of cooking, but lots of stories with early photos and clips from some of the programmes.  I laughed till I cried at some of their antics, don't go if you are easily offended!

Sadly they announced that photographs were not allowed, I had already taken a couple of the stage before the announcement, but didn't risk it once the bikers were on stage.

They made South Indian King Prawns in Coconut with Kerala Parathas in the first half, then Tuscan Beef Supper and Lemon & Courgette Linguine in the second half.  All the recipes and more were included in the Tour Programme (first photo).

Two lucky couples were invited onto the stage to eat these dishes, but sadly we were not chosen.  What was really interesting was how mixed the audience was, there were all ages and lots of men as well as women.  I think this reflects the universal appeal of the Hairy Bikers and their down to earth outlook on life.

Be back soon...

Sorry I haven't been blogging as frequently as usual.  Just too much going on and a lack of time for inspiring cooking.  Hope to have some stuff for you soon.
